mood: mellow mellow

I got a rejection from Stephen Barbara and was totally floored when I realized I was glad!  My book is no where near ready and I was unbelievably stressed trying to revise in a rush.  Now I can relax and do it right.  But really, it doesn't even seem important to me any more.  I've been placing too much importance on my writing and letting all the important things go by.
Writing isn't the only thing in life, but I have allowed it to seem that way.  I think I'll take some time off and learn how to smell the roses again.

Yeah, I have to keep reminding myself that it's all about balance...writing, kids, husband, along time -- and that's just the personal stuff! Then you add in financial concerns, and whoosh -- there goes my balance again :) enjoy the beauty, and then give me some tips on how you found your balance, k? :D

How to smell the roses:

1) Be sure there are no small bugs in the flower
2) Insert nose in flower and inhale

It's no fun to get one of those green ladybugs up your nose. Also I hate the green ladybugs because they eat the stamens off the white roses and then the whole flower falls apart.

Enjoy taking it easy!

Some really smart expert type person released a trillion of them here to eat pests. They are so over run they come in our houses. In the fall there will be a solid wall of them in certain rooms. It's really gross.

The green ladybugs (they're not really ladybugs) are evil. The red ones are fine, though the large orange ones will sometimes bite you.

Do you vacuum them up when they come in? (remove the vacuum cleaner bag immediately, though -- the ladybugs will start making a bad smell.) You might also spray the ones on the outside of the house with soapy water.

My grandma has the same trouble with boxelder bugs. They get into her window, the one with like 50 potted plants, so it's hard to get them all.

If the bugs happen to be on the windows, spray them with soapy water or Windex.

Try to find any cracks outside the house NOW and caulk them up.

Hope that helps!

Yeah, I already do all that. These are the kind they call Japenese Beetles and they stink really bad. We have the same problem with boxelders too.

I got a lightening fast rejection from him- very nice, though. Said it was too dark for him.

Wise words, Dumpyrain. Time off is good for letting all those ideas percolate. Enjoy yourself!

Time off can be so releasing. Just like any job, I guess. You have to take a vacation, and days off during the week, or you just get burned out.

Sorry about the rejection - but what a great attitude! I know exactly what you mean. We definitely need some time off for ourselves and our families. Besides, how much new inspiration is going to hit us when we're locked inside an office all day.

Hope you enjoy some time off, and that everything falls into place when you return to your manuscript.

Thanks Jayme, Ha Ha. You can relax the ol' biceps though. I'm already back at work. I never do what I say when it comes to taking time off. Leave my keyboard!! No way!

Hugs, Inky. Balance is a wonderful goal, and I'm nowhere near achieving it. .

I got a very encouraging no from him.

But what I learned when I was submitting and had to cut it off at page 29 was--
This chapter ending, unlike most of them, didn't have a cliff-hanger. It was just a reflective pause in the action.

I'm going to see whether I can make ALL my chapter endings, except the last one, either clifff-hangers or, at least, more suspenseful.

I hear ya, Linda. I did the same thing with My Destination-Imagination? novel. I subbed it before I was ready to then scrounged to do a rewrite I wasn't happy with. The result? A predictable rejection. You've got a great novel though. When the time is right you'll feel like subbing it again. I know what you mean about priorities and time though. My son is starting Kindergarten in two weeks and I've been wondering where the past 5 1/2 years have gone? How did it go so fast? And was I as "present" as I needed to be? Oh, the contemplations of life...

Hi, Linda,

I think it's true that writers need to take some time to experience life. When writers visit friends, weed their gardens, or travel, we get new ideas. I like taking a walk and actually seeing the wildflowers I'm trying to describe, instead of sitting at my computer and trying to remember what they look like.

I'm so glad you're working on your book again. Recharge, then revise.

Hi Stef,

I always go through a slump after a rejection. But as you know I really didn't think the book was ready when I subbed it. Now I'm agonizing over whether or not it's even worth trying to save. It needs major work.
You're right, though. Flowers help. Jack's hibiscus are are still in bloom and a few other odds and ends. Next year I'll do more with them. They got totally ignored this year. That is if I still live here.

It always amazes me what a little rosesmelling does for the writing muse. Just remember to come back to the keyboard. ;)
